The abundance of natural hot springs across Japan has allowed the Japanese to enjoy bathing in onsen - so much that it can be considered a national pastime. Onsen has been and is still a popular destination and a reason to travel, and many ryokans consider it as one of their main experiences, boasting of their baths made of high-quality woodwork and mineral-rich water in providing the ultimate relaxing experience. Open-air onsen (roten-buro) is also what many look forward to.

Even at such ryokans, onsen are generally public baths only separated by gender, which means you will be sharing the space with other people. Many facilities also have traditionally restricted the use of public baths for those with tattoos for cultural reasons. These and other factors have potentially excluded many inbound visitors to experience onsen.

The new website within Japan Travel by NAVITIME will provide information of exclusively selected of ryokans that have rooms with open-air onsen, allowing visitors to enjoy onsen along with the seasonal landscape, or even the night sky within the privacy of their own room.

Approximately 100 Ryokans will be selected from the areas most traveled by the international travelers using Japan Travel by NAVITIME (app and web), in the areas of Tokyo, Hakone, Nikko, Lake Kawaguchi, Arima, and Yufuin. Reservations will be made through Agoda and JAPANiCAN.com.
