NAVITIME Spot Search Ranking 2025

International Visitors Split by Culture: Europeans Seek History, Oceania Seeks Pop culture, While Locals Eye the Expo

Tokyo, Japan - January 22, 2026 -
NAVITIME JAPAN Co., Ltd. released its "NAVITIME Spot Search Ranking 2025," a comprehensive analysis based on spot searches on its navigation services from its Japanese and international user base.

The 2025 data reveal a significant divergence in travel behaviors: while domestic searches reflect interest in the Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan, international visitors are carving out entirely different paths based on their cultural origins.

■ 2025 Key Trends:
The "Purpose" Divide: Inbound tourism has fragmented. European travelers are prioritizing heritage (ranking Nikko Toshogu #1), while Oceanian visitors are focused on entertainment (ranking Universal Studios Japan #1). The "Golden Route" is no longer the sole standard.
"Visual" Tourism: From the thousands of Daruma dolls at Katsuoji Temple to the digital art of teamLab Planets TOKYO DMM, visual impact is still a strong driver for Asian and Western travelers alike, often outranking traditional landmarks.
Domestic Interest to Osaka: Rankings for spots in Osaka have risen compared to 2024. This suggests an influence from Osaka-Kansai Expo 2025.

1. Inbound Trends: Varying Trends by Area (Europe and Oceania)
The "Spot Search Ranking by inbound tourists by Area 2025" uncovers that travelers from different continents are experiencing different versions of Japan.

Europe (History & Nature): European tourists are bypassing modern attractions to find the "Old Japan." Remarkably, Nikko Toshogu Shrine took the #1 spot for users from Europe, surpassing all locations in Tokyo and Kyoto. With Shirakawa-go also ranking at #10, this demographic shows a clear preference for Samurai history and rural preservation.

Oceania (Pop culture): In sharp contrast, travelers from Oceania are prioritizing high-energy experiences. Universal Studios Japan is their #1 destination, followed by TeamLab Planets (#2). They are also the only group to rank the amusement park Fuji-Q Highland (#10) in their top tier. For them, Japan is a premier destination for adventures and pop culture.

2. Inbound Trends: Asia & The Americas (Shopping and Food)
The data also highlights distinct motivations for Asian and North American visitors:
Asia (East Asia and Other Asia): Spots such as Universal Studios Japan, Tokyo Disneyland, and Gotemba Premium Outlets ranked high, suggesting a strong demand for theme parks and shopping.

The Americas: North American travelers remain loyal to the "Golden Route" but with a twist: they are the only group to rank Dotonbori (#5) and Yokohama Chinatown (#8), Nishiki Market Shopping street (#10) in their Top 10, showing they enjoy the experience of walking and eating through bustling streets.

3. Domestic Trends: The Expo Effect?
Domestically, the Osaka Kansai World Expo Venue ranked #7 in the overall search ranking. While Tokyo Big Sight (#1) remains the top destination for business and events, the rankings of spots within Osaka Prefecture have risen, suggesting an influence from the upcoming Expo. This trend is reflected in the spots GRAND FRONT OSAKA #27 and Dotonbori #79 , as travelers combine Expo visits with local sightseeing.
